Basic Auto Glass Terminology
- Antenna Glass -
Some vehicles have the radio antenna incorporated into the windshield or back glass (rear window).
- Bead -
Sealant or adhesive applied to a joint (for example a urethane bead applied to the pinchweld). A bead
is a continuous ribbon of adhesive.
- Belt Molding -
Rubber molding between the inner and outer panels of the vehicle's door.

- Edge Crack -
A crack that extends to the edge of the windshield.
- Gasket -
Seal that holds the auto glass to the vehicle body (usually made of rubber).
- Headliner -
The material (usually fabric) that lines the roof of the vehicle (inside the car).
- Laminated Glass -
Laminated glass is two or more glass layers with one or more interlayers of plastic (PVB) or resin. In case of
breakage, the interlayer holds the pieces together and provides resistance to objects (such as a person falling through it).
This glass is suitable for installation in store-fronts, doors, balconies, stair-railings, roof glazing.
- Mirror -
Mirrors are made using a smooth, polished glass surface that forms an
image when light is reflected. The backing of mirrors can be silver, gray, bronze, etc.
providing different appearances to the mirror.
- OEM -
Abbreviation for Original Equipment Manufacturer
- Pinchweld -
Refers to the Metal Joint Weld is the part of the vehicle frame the glass adheres.
- Regulator -
Mechanical device that enables the power window to roll up and down.
- Safety Glass -
Typically refers to laminated or tempered glass
- Tempered Glass -
Tempered glass is stronger than normal annealed glass. When broken, it also shatters into many small pieces
which prevent major injuries. This glass is suitable for glass façades, sliding doors, building entrances,
bath and shower enclosures and other uses requiring superior strength and safety properties.
- Weatherstrip -
Refers to a strip of material used on windows and doors to reduce leaks
and help prevent rain and wind from entering around the structure.
- Wired Glass -
Typically refers to glass where a wire mess has been inserted into the glass. It provides impact
resistance similar to normal glass but in case of breakage the mesh holds the glass pieces together.
